Most lighting columns and many illuminated signs have a direct connection from the Regional Electricity Company (REC) electricity network. This connection is terminated in the base of the unit in a fused cut-out, owned by the REC. This fused cut-out has more than one function. a) It protects the electricity supply network from faults on the customer's equipment. b) It protects the customer's installation from excessive damage when a fault occurs on that installation. c) It protects operatives and the public from the dangers of electric shock from the installation. d) It provides a means of disconnecting the customer's installation so that work can be carried out on the installation.
