One of the most important features of time-dependent reservoir characterization is the added additional constraints that can be incorporated to update the initial reservoir model. Uncertainty of the model may be gradually reduced as the iteration of time-dependent reservoir characterization continues. We have developed a method that integrates time-lapse seismic inversion, geostatistical reservoir description, and reservoir simulation to update the initial reservoir model in terms of porosity and permeability. The updating is based on minimization of the error between the predicted time-lapse impedance differences and the observed impedance differences and the error between the predicted production history and the observed production history. The results obtained from Eugene Island indicate that reservoir simulation is a critical and complementary tool to verify 4-D signatures obtained from legacy time-lapse 3-D seismic data sets.
