Deepwater Horizon ELI staff work with gulf communities, Mexican law center to improve and coordinate spill response strategies

A year after the Deepwater Horizon blowout and spill in the Gulf of Mexico, local communities face the challenge of restoring and protecting their coastal and marine environment. "The gulf has struggled for decades to balance its resource potential and sustainabil-ity," says ELI Staff Attorney Jordan Diamond. "Myriad plans have sought to address specific issues and concerns. The key today is to marry those plans with the new efforts to overcome the devastation caused by the Deepwater Horizon disaster." ELI is helping the gulf recover from recent and long-term impacts through three simultaneous efforts. First, ELI is addressing long-term questions about die adequacy of the laws and institutions for protecting and restoring gulf habitat.
