The rapid developments of various sensors, advances in computing power, and unprecedented new telecommunications capabilities have resulted in a recent proliferation of efforts seeking to use data to advance social goals. The Toxics Release Inventory provides valuable insights and lessons for those seeking to use data in such efforts after more than a quarter century of chronicling pollutant emissions.
