Ireland's Universities and Institutes of Technology should, in theory, be hothouses creating ideal conditions conducive to the development of the country's knowledge economy, but how does reality measure up? Professor Patrick Prendergast, Director of the Trinity Centre for Bioengineering (TCBE) in the TCD School of Engineering and Dean of Graduate Studies for the University, provides the Journal with an overview of the challenges facing the Irish higher education sector and discusses the work being carried out at the TCBE.
