In assessing risks for engineers in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, Graeme Tinney explores how we can draw on the experience of the Celtic Tiger years and the challenges faced by construction consultants at that timernJust over ten years ago, The Engineer's Journal invited comment from my company's perspective, as insurance adviser to Engineers Ireland, on the subject of professional risk for consulting engineers operating in the construction sector. Looking back at that article, it is striking to see the similarities that exist between those issues and the challenges now facing the information and communications technology sector.rnIt would be unfortunate if we had to repeat the mistakes of the past before recognising the risks we face into the future and 'getting the contract right' would seem to be a key message. In the mid to late-1990s firms in the construction sector faced a sharp increase in the demand for their services. Even so, many firms maintained an almost exclusive focus on winning contracts, often without fully appreciating the risk implications of the contracts that they were taking on. The challenge was to build bigger and faster than ever before, and to maximise development potential through the application of more innovative design solutions.
