Just weeks before completing a two-year postgraduate programme, Padraig O'Connor was promoted. The 29-year-old engineering manager with Guidant Technologies, Clonmel, had returned to study in 1999 enrolling in the Master of Industrial Engineering Programme at University College Dublin. "I chose the MIE because it's a broad-based masters for someone who wants to go the management route but keep close ties with the engineering world. I looked at MBA programmes but I wanted something with a wider scope and a stronger technological focus which would build on my engineering strengths and background." The MIE Programme's track record dates from the late 1960s. Established to enhance management education for engineering and other technical graduates, the curriculum is revised regularly to reflect the changing demands of industry. The subjects are structured around four core areas, operations, business, technology and systems.
