Investment in motorways yields huge state benefits - NRA

Mr Barry was addressing the Roads and Transportation Society of Engineers Ireland on Wednesday, May 19. Members of the audience included many of the engineers who worked to ensure that the Government's vision of a national motorway network was delivered. Mr Barry set out his review of the programme, which was initiated in 2000 to connect Belfast (to the border), Galway, Limerick, Cork, and Waterford to Dublin by motorways and dual carriageways. The construction of the motorway network followed the publication of the National Roads Needs Study in 1998 and was the culmination of significant political and engineering effort.
