A second Conversion Course for engineers has successfully launched in the Galway area with 25 unemployed engineers taking part, completing 10 weeks directed technical training and workshops relevant to the med tech/pharma sectors before taking up six month placements in firms in these sectors in the Galway region. The IBEC Life Science Skillnet is funding this programme with the help and support of Engineers Ireland, the Department of Education and Skills and others, including NUIG. The process is supervised and supported by mentors to ensure that the participating companies and the trainees will optimise the relationship with tangible outputs. Engineers Ireland plans to continue to support and run conversion programmes for engineers from traditional disciplines to transition into areas which have higher levels of vacancies.
