Total hip replacement project wins top award in national finals

Niamh Thompson of Cork Institute of Technology is the winner of the QSJ Institution of Mechanical Engineers 2003/2004 Competition to determine the best mechanical engineering degree project in Ireland. The national competition, the final of which took place at University College Dublin, is based on submission of a paper summary and presentation of a formal address to a panel of expert judges. Niamh will travel to London on March 4, 2004, to represent Ireland in the international final of the QSJ competition. Her project, carried out under the supervision of Dr Keith Bryan, and in conjunction with orthopaedic surgeons at Cork University Hospital and St Mary's Orthopaedic Hospital, Cork, examined the influence of surgical solutions on the fatigue properties of total hip replacement bone cement.
