This month we have a straightforward engineering problem. Recently, a neighbour fell victim to oil thieves and called upon my engineering skill to help him. This gang roam the country with an oil lorry which they brazenly fill from domestic oil tanks. My neighbour had gotten a delivery the day before and wanted to know how much oil had been stolen. His tank is an old steel cylindrical tank mounted on its side and he measures the level of oil with a dipstick that he has marked off in decimetres. He reckons there was 100cm depth of oil in it and after the thieves there was only 20cm left. I estimated the tank to be 1.2m in diameter and 2m in length. Can you estimate how much oil was stolen?
