It was over 40 years ago that Volvo first attempted to shake its staid and sensible image. And that first move was quite a success. The P1800 it launched was anything but staid and sensible and became best known as Simon Templar's car in the hit British series, The Saint. But the situation never moved on and the company reverted to type retaining its safe, sensible image. Twenty years later, in the 1980s, the company tried again with the launch of the 460 and 480. Four seats, three doors and as much attitude as the Swedes could muster. The cars weren't a success and again Volvo returned to type launching a range of boxy, safe and rather dull family cars.
