In the final weeks of 1999, we canvassed the views of 30 influential men and women closely involved with British industry, asking what they thought the future held for manu- facturing, and what the government should be doing about it. These opinions were reported in our cover story on 7 January 2000, '2020 Visions'. Most people we spoke to thought the share of manufacturing in the overall economy would continue to decline. Some even thought this does not matter. But the most diverse range of opinions came when we asked people to judge the government's performance in ensuring the continuing success of our sector of the economy.
