Despite current economic woes the UK offshore oil and gas industry remains one of the nation's success stories, providing three quarters of our primary energy.rnThe industry employs 380,000 people and has invested ￡150bn over the last 25 years, a figure that accounts for 20 per cent of UK total annual investment. That is not to say there are no problems. The Oil and Gas UK 2008 Activity Survey, which summarises planned expenditure on the UK continental shelf (UKCS) by 75 oil and gas companies, recently revealed that the combination of low oil prices and the freezing of capital markets could have a marked effect on exploration and development activity over the next 12 to 18 months.
