With respect to the letter presented by Simon Martin, ('New apprenticeships are welcome but let's cut out the worthless degrees', The Engineer, 14 February), I am one of those who went through an engineering apprenticeship in the early 1980s, qualified with an HNC in electronic engineering and, later, after being employed, returned to higher education to obtain a degree qualification, also in electronic engineering. To my surprise, the degree studies, even in the final year, were of no greater academic level or intensity than my HNC studies, and the engineering mathematics was notably easier within my degree than my HNC.
