The global sensors market will be worth some $76bn (£48bn) by 2017, according to US-based markets researcher Global Industry Analysts (GIA). Chemicals sensors are the largest market segment, it said in a recent report, although the fastest-growing segment is sensors for the automotive market. Vehicle manufacturers are looking to sensor technologies to improve the effectiveness of airbags and vehicle dynamic controls, GIA said; these depend on seat occupancy sensors and angular rate sensors. Other electronics help improve performance in safety, fuel economy and emissions control, meaning that cars contain an ever-increasing number of sensor-based systems and devices.
