German energy giants RWE AG and E.On AG announced the formation of a joint venture Wednesday to build 6,000 megawatts of new nuclear capacity in the UK, adding a powerful new player to what is expected to be heated competition for billions of dollars of new reactor business.rnThe two companies-normally rivals-said their financial strength posi-rntions them well to undertake the massive task of new nuclear construction, which costs several billion dollars per reactor. The Germans' chief rivals will be Electricite de France (EDF), the French electricity giant, which last year gained access to several existing UK nuclear sites by purchasing British Energy, Britain's largest nuclear generator. EDF is allied with French reactor vendor Areva, which manufactures the 1,600 MW Evolutionary Power Reactor (EPR).
