Maryland Regulators Reject BG&E Smart Grid Proposal

Maryland regulators this week rejected Balti-rnmore Gas & Electric Co.'s "smart grid" plan as not in the public interest, saying it would force ratepayers to shoulder all the costs and risks of advanced meter installation while imposing mandatory time-of-use rates that provided no assurance of energy bill savings-and which could raise the rates of elderly and other customers that could not cut energy usage during peak demand periods.
