Miss. high court asked to void Miss. Power rate hike

A Mississippi businessman has asked the Mississippi Supreme Court to overrule a decision by the state public service com­mission to approve an emergency $159 million rate increase for Mississippi Power Co. to enable continued construction of its novel gasified coal plant in the state’s Kemper County and help the utility avoid bankruptcy, saying the approval violates a prior high court order prohibiting the commission from backing Kemper rate increases without first conducting a pru­dency review of the associated costs.
