USEPA launches three-year EMS 'experiment'

As UK regulators grapple with the uncertainties of environmental management systems, including whether and how these can be relied upon to deliver improved performance compliance with environmental legislation, US regulators have launched a programme in a bid to find answers to the same questions. Two years ago the US Environmental Protection Agency published a position statement on EMSs expressing its support for them as a voluntary tool which delivers benefits beyond those that could be prescribed by legislation. Since then, the EPA has tested various ways of working with EMSs for instance through a national environmental performance track programme which awards accolades to participating facilities and through sector-specific initiatives. It has also supported pilots at state level.
