DEFRA sets out belated plans on implementing noise Directive

Plans to map all major sources of environmental noise from roads, railways, airports and industrial sites in the UK and take action to reduce noise "if necessary" under the environmental noise Directive have been published by the Environment Department. DEFRA has made a late start, missing the implementation deadline, with the first round of noise maps due in mid-2007. The EU Directive on the assessment and management of environmental noise was finalised almost three years ago and was supposed to have been transposed by Member States by July 2004 (ENDS Report 327, pp 50-51). The UK may face infraction proceedings from the European Commission.
