Guidelines issued to help avoid pollution incidents

UK environmental protection agencies have updated joint, non-statutory guidance on planning to stop or reduce damage from environmental incidents.rnThe Northern Ireland Environment Agency, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Environment Agency -known as the Environment Alliance - have produced new advice on incident response planning.1 It should help businesses prevent incidents or reduce damage to the environment if they occur. The guidance is aimed at firms and organisations that do not have a statutory duty to prepare incident response plans, unlike those regulated under the Environmental Permitting Regulations or the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations. For these, it may be used to supplement existing guidance.
