Moves to landfill radioactive waste are hit by planning hurdles

Plans to greatly expand landfill capacity for radioactive waste from nuclear decommissioning activities have stalled in the planning process. In March, Northamptonshire County Council refused waste-firm Augean permission to take low-level, and very low-level, waste at its King's Cliffe landfill near Peterborough.rnVery low-level waste (VLLW) has a radioactivity of up to 4 Becquerels per gram. Low-level waste (LLW) contains up to 4,000Bq/g alpha or 12,000Bq/g beta and gamma radioactivity. Both consist mainly of rubble and metal from demolished buildings at former nuclear sites such as Sellafield (pictured above).
