EDF APPLIES FOR FIRST NEW NUCLEAR PLANT

French energy giant EDF is seeking development consent for the UK's first new nuclear power plant since the 1990s.1 It applied to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) on 31 October for two reactors with a combined capacity of 3.2 gigawatt at Hinkley Point in Somerset. The existing 870-megawatt plant at the site is due to close in 2016. EDF has already submitted applications for some of the necessary environmental and safety consents (ENDS Report 439, pp 15-16). On 1 November, the Environment Agency also started consulting on an environmental permit to discharge cooling water from the proposed plant into the Severn estuary.
