Member states to test chemicals for health and environment risks

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has published a draft list of the first 91 substances to be evaluated under the EU REACH chemicals regime.1 Substance evaluation is the REACH process in which suspected but unproven health or environmental risks can be investigated. It is due to begin next year and could lead to further regulatory action on chemicals where suspected risks are confirmed. Each chemical selected for evaluation will be assigned to a member state, which will be given €50,000 and 12 months to complete the process. At the end of the period the member state may conclude there are no risks or it may issue legally binding requests to substance registrants for further data needed for clarification.
