Firms ordered to pay £100k for waste offences

Five haulage firms and a skip hire company director have been ordered to pay a total of almost £100,000 in fines, costs and proceeds of crime payments after illegally disposing of thousands of tonnes of waste. At Truro crown court on 16 August, Michael Leah, the main defendant, pleaded guilty to six charges of illegally tipping waste. For breaching sections 33(i)(a),(b) and 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, he received a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years. He was also ordered to pay £50,000 under the Proceeds of Crime Act and £4,000 costs. Leah had been the director of an eponymous skip hire company and of Badgers Cross waste transfer station in Ludgvan, near Penzance. Both companies are now in liquidation.
