Nuclear processor Sellafield Ltd has lost its appeal against a £700,000 waste fine. The Court of Appeal dismissed the case in a judgment published on 17 January, saying the sentence accurately reflected the crime.1 Carlisle crown court fined Sellafield on 17 June 2013 for sending low-level radioactive waste to landfill ENDS Report 462, p23). The company appealed the fine on the basis that it was "excessive", saying that no actual harm had been caused and the risk of harm was very low. It said no credit had been given for its guilty plea and its cooperation with the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive.
