Green taxes bring in more cash but same proportion of GDP

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) uses a much broader definition of environmental taxes than the Treasury and HM Revenue and Customs (see p7), in line with EU accounting rules, to include schemes such as air passenger duty and fishing licences. Its figures show the UK brought in £44.6bn from environmental taxation in 2014 - more than double that of 20 years ago. But the total has remained fairly consistent as a proportion of overall taxation and gross domestic product (see figure 1).
