‘Negligent’ water company fined £150,000 for nature reserve sewage spill

Utility Yorkshire Water has been fined £150,000 and ordered to pay out more than £35,000 incosts after a valve failure at a sewage treatment works saw sewage effluent discharged intoa South Yorkshire nature reserve.District Judge Redhouse handed the company the fine at Sheffield magistrates court earlier this week, after it hadpleaded guilty to two charges at an earlier hearing relating to the incident in 2017 when sewage effluent was illegallydischarged into the Potter Carr Nature Reserve in Doncaster.
