The steady march of corporate reporting

Corporate reporting (CR) refers to regular reporting by firms on non-financial aspects of their performance, both narrative and quantitative. It spans social, environmental, sustainability, health and safety issues. CR has grown rapidly across the globe, emerging from almost nowhere in 1990 to become an increasingly mainstream activity. Corporate Register expects to log more than 9,000 annual reports this year alone - the majority from Europe. At least two thirds of FTSE250 companies now participate according to KPMG (see p44). In the UK, growth has been impressive, doubling since 2006 to more than 700 reports logged so far in 2015 (see figure 1). Support services now dominate global reporting, followed by banks, transport, electricity, construction and chemicals (see figure 2).
