During the Covid-19 pandemic, the mantra of "following the science" has been oft-repeated by politicians (even though, some may argue, the scientists' advice has sometimes been disregarded). As the crunch COP26 climate summit approaches, major economies are making similar claims when it comes to their strategies to tackle the climate crisis. "All decisions should be made on the basis of the best available science," said COP26 president Alok Sharma in a speech in May. The UK's chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, has been appointed the chief scientific adviser to the summit, Sharma announced. "I know that his appointment will send a strong message about the importance of being guided by science as we tackle the crisis," Sharma said.
