Council waives EIA for shale gas exploration

Chemicals firm Ineos will not need to carry out an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to explore for shale gas at a site in north-east Derbyshire, a council has ruled. Ineos submitted a screening report, the first step towards a planning application, in January 2016 and on 28 February 2017 Derbyshire County Council told it that an application for exploration drilling could proceed without an EIA. Similar exploration applications in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire have involved EIAs.
