It's 30 March 2019 and the UK is waking up to an entirely new political landscape. Last-minute talks to extend the country's EU membership have collapsed. Prime minister Theresa May has delivered a Brexit that many believed would never happen: Britain will leave the EU without a deal. While May used to claim that "no deal is better than a bad deal", crashing out of the EU brings unprecedented risks to the UK's environmental protections, which have been profoundly shaped by decades of European law. But the most immediate environmental fallout stems from chaos at the UK's borders. Lorries queue for miles on both sides of the Channel. The disruption hits the UK's just-in-time supply chains, leaving supermarkets scrambling to restock, farmers unable to export livestock, shortages in chemicals needed to treat drinking water and waste destined for export rapidly piling up.
