摘要

When John Major, with much solemnity and reverence, announced to Parliament on July 3rd that a lump of rock called the Stone of Scone (also known as the Stone of Destiny) was to be returned from London to Scotland 700 years after it was pinched by the English, cynics jeered that it was a pathetic vote-catching ploy. Some Scots (who knew their history) were amused; most (who didn't) were bemused.
