The convention begins with a procession of glityy bands, soul singers and rock-and-rollers. It continues with a party, the sort that all conventions have, with supporters wearing pictures of their man emblazoned on their shirts, and some with his image on their earrings. Throughout the week he will be praised a thousand times, in platform speeches and (more exuberantly still) in drunken late-night sessions. This candidate for America's affections began life penniless, but appeals to rich and poor alike; he is white, but has often mixed with blacks; he is a southerner, but has millions of northern devotees; he is a man, but women simply adore him. In fact, being president might actually diminish someone so great. He is more of a king, really.
