If boris yeltsin wins re-election as president of Russia in June, he may look back on the past week as a turning-point in his fortunes. Outfooted for months by his Communist rival, Gennady Zyuganov, outpointed in the opinion polls and reduced to echoing much of Mr Zyuganov's populist rhetoric on economic and social issues, Mr Yeltsin has at last succeeded in seizing the initiative.
