Reyner Banham was essential reading throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and into the 1980s. One of his greatest abilities was to provide a commentary, both insightful and entertaining, on the designs we used in everyday life, whether kitchen appliances, cars or graphics. His scope was all-encompassing and included Braun's 'Snow White's Coffin' aesthetic, car customization and the iconography of crisp packet graphics. Some of these articles, originally published in New Statesman then in New Society, have been anthologized in recent years in A Critic Writes (University of California Press, 1996).
