The fourth book of Horace’s Carmina contains the one interpolation which editorsnand interpreters consider absolutely certain, although they disagree about itsnprecise extent.1 It is not unlikely that Carm. 4, compared with the previous threenbooks, had a smaller circulation of copies directly checked by the author: hencensome predisposition to the addition of spurious verses already in the oldest stagesnof transmission (1st c. A.D.?).
