Joining the Global Public: Word, Images, and City in Early Chinese Newspapers, 1870-1910

In the early 1980s, when I first grew interested in Shanghai's treaty-port century (1843-1943), there were few places to turn for guidance about the evolution, style or history of the city's Chinese-language periodicals. It was easy to figure out how to make the most of relevant English-language publications, such as the North China Herald, but much harder - and not just because of language issues - to start perusing comparable Chinese ones, such as the long-lived Shenbao and its pictorial complement, Dianshizhai huabao.
