From time to time we work directly with our customers in the pressroom on a variety of problems that arise pertaining to print quality or inks. A notable recent project involved an ink-scumming problem that occurred with conventional inks. The first stage of our problem-solving programme is to test the inks for water pick-up - this is a lab test that determines how much water a pigment will pick up in the lithography process. Each pigment can pick up differing amounts of water.
