The initial design of CanReseal, unveiled in October 2018 after six years of development, featured a familiar stay-on-tab score panel with a screw-on cap made of compostable polylactic acid (PLA). The latest version, developed in partnership with Stolle Machinery, delivers on Canovation's ambition for an all-metal resealable container. The aluminium end and closure system can be made for all standard beverage can sizes, as well as food and general line cans. While commercial resealable ends have been available for the past 15 years - from the pioneering Ball's BRE end developed with Coca-Cola, which features an injection-moulded plastics opening device that is rotated to open and reseal the drink, to the XO end from Xolution in Germany, which has a plastics sliding opening device - CanReseal is different. The CanReseal design boasts a socketed end featuring internal side walls that have threads into which an aluminium closure is inserted to create the seal. The technology was invented by Canovation's chief engineer Daniel Zabaleta and former company president Sam Hackett. Consultant Joseph Bulso, who has been behind many of the key developments in D&I beverage can and end production for more than 50 years, provided the manufacturing expertise to develop the product.
