Brazilian brewer Ambev is planning to build a canmaking plant adjacent to its facility in Sete Lagoas in the central Minas Gerais region. The US$175 million project will be the first time that a drinks manufacturer has constructed its own beverage can plant in South America, and means the brewer will be competing directly with the domestic canmaking plants run by Ardagh, Ball, Canpack, and Crown. The plant will have two D&I can body lines and an end-making line in a facility covering 45,000sqm, with an expected start-up in late 2020. Likely initial capacity will be about 1.5 billion cans and ends a year, with room for expansion.
