TMS: Spanning the Globe Through Materials Science and Engineering

In 1871, a group of metallurgists and mining engineers in Pennsylvania established the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME) in an effort to share professional knowledge and experience with their peer s. Today, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) has long since evolved out of that prestigious organisation to become a global society of engineers and researchers representing the broad spectrum of metallurgy and materials science in industry, government, and academia. Headquartered in the United States, but international in both its membership and activities, TMS is a rare professional organisation that encompasses the entire range of materials and engineering, from minerals processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of materials. Included among its nearly 13 000 professional and student members are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators, and atministrators from 77 countries on six continents. Membership in TMS is not for everyone, however, as it is the rare major materials society to require its members to demonstrate a record of specific academic and professional accomplishment in order to qualify for membership.
