AusIMM YOUTH CONGRESS 2001 ELIMINATION OF FATALITIES: DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE WMC MAJOR HAZARD STANDARDS

In conjunction with other safety initiatives, the major hazard standards have significantly enhanced the safety culture throughout WMC and have led to a company wide prioritisation of safety. Safety statistics over the past few years, since implementation of the standards began, clearly illustrate the success of the EOFT initiative and the progress towards elimination of fatalities from the business (illustrated in Figure 1). Involvement of the author in the implementation of the explosives standard at the Olympic Dam Operation was highly beneficial. It not only assisted the author in his understanding of the operation it significantly contributed to his development as a professional in the minerals industry.
