In the increasingly security-driven world of airport design, acoustics may not be the first issue that comes to mind — yet they are essential for controlling aircraft noise. Even more challenging in today's open-plan airports, where architecture is often characterised by a dramatic roof profile, is how to control background noise and reverberation so that public-address systems can operate effectively to ensure safety in an emergency. While soaring spaces and large glazed surfaces maximise natural light and views, they are at odds with the life-safety measures which depend on communicating to passengers within discrete zones of the terminal. Partial or phased evacuation, now the norm, relies on the public address system to deliver intelligible speech to different terminal zones — and that's where acoustic design comes in.
