The latest controversy surrounding Britain's childcare rules and regulations involves two policewomen working alternating shifts being told they cannot look after each other's child without breaking the law. This is only one example of what one might describe as the infantilisation of society, in which nothing can happen unless it has been cross-checked with 'health and safety', 'data protection' and other official guardians, who may or may not know what they are doing. We are thereby reducing ourselves to puppets in the hands of single-interest pressure groups who lack any sense of irony in respect of the effect of their activities on society as a whole.
