Forgotten Spaces Sheffield: winners

A proposal to transform 'dark and scary' passages with an illuminated, smartphone-controlled walkway, has won the £5,000 first prize in the Forgotten Spaces 2011: Sheffield competition. Designed by 30-year-old Chris Paterson, the Guiding Lights scheme for Frog Walk features animated LED 'avatars', which use motion sensors to track and interact with people as they pass. The judges, including RIBA Yorkshire's director Emma England, Miles Price of British Land and AJ's deputy editor Rory Olcayto were, 'seduced by the beautifully rendered images and the idea of bringing fantasy sci-fi wildlife into the city'.
