The roof is often the most vulnerable part of a building not least because, on low rise developments, it can be the largest exposed surface but is often concealed, in which case it will need regular inspection, large safety margins in its design and precautions such as overflows. Roofs are now expected to do more. There are more exacting requirements for safety, thermal performance, natural ventilation, daylight, rainwater harvesting and biodiversity. They are also expected to incorporate more kit, for example photovoltaic cells and green roofs are more popular than ever.
