With the growing popularity of green roofs and rooftop kit such as photovoltaic devices, wind catchers and rooflights, flat roofs are often seen as the best option. These enhancements do not preclude pitched roofs, but there is now more confidence in, and better understanding of, flat roofs. Parapets, and therefore copings, are often a bi-product of this and they are also used on sloping walls. A building's skyline is one of its most sensitive visual features, so copings that looks smart and precise are often a priority. Off-site fabrication, secret fixings, attention to detail in finishes specification and, in the case of aluminium copings, a gauge that is sufficiently thick to accurately follow the architect's setting-out and also look rigid, are essential for a satisfactory appearance.
