Picking up on Christine Murray's leader (AJ 17.02.11), I agree that competitions are a great platform for small practices, but unfortunately in this country open competitions are frequently just a vehicle to raise the profile of a local initiative or agency. The emphasis on proving yourself in competitions is quite disheartening for a small practice, since your ability to take on larger commissions isn't judged by previous work, but by what you can communicate to a jury in a few seconds. The winner is more likely to be based on jury connections or who is represented by what PR agency.
